Ice Climbing in the San Juans

There is nothing quite like climbing a frozen waterfall. It is certainly the most fantastic winter adventure in the San Juan Mountains! Using ice axes, crampons, helmets and harnesses, you will have the chance to scale Telluride’s most exquisite ice in some of our region’s most beautiful settings.

On all of our trips there are no hidden fees. All of our ice climbing outings includes professional guiding/instruction never to exceed a 4:1 ratio. We also supply all the needed technical ice climbing equipment, transpiration, other equipment that may be needed and a complementary digital photo service is supplied on most trips.

We offer a choice of several backcountry lodging accommodations ranging from rustic to deluxe. Our guides will provide you with a gourmet dining experience and all the comforts of home while sharing in the ultimate winter adventure. An overnight or multi-day winter hut trip allows you to get deep into Telluride’s backcountry and sleep amidst towering peaks and the majestic frozen landscape. Snug by the fire, you can sip hot cocoa while looking at the finest scenery through frosted windows.

The San Juan Field School offers several avalanche education opportunities throughout the winter season including one 4-day avalanche course, two 3-day avalanche courses, one 2-day avalanche course, our free Monday Night Avalanche Awareness Forum Series and as well as our free Avalanche Beacon Rescue Clinics. Our 4 and 3-day courses curricula adhere to American Avalanche Association (AAA) guidelines and curriculum from the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE) and all participants receive a Certificate of Completion for these courses. Field sessions make up at least 50% of course content and are conducted in real avalanche terrain. All of our highly-skilled instructors/guides are avalanche forecasters, snow safety experts, professional ski patrollers and/or professional members of the AAA and/or AIARE who understand the importance of creating dynamic and interesting lessons. Our Monday Night Avalanche Forums are designed to encourage avalanche safety and awareness and involve a variety of guest speakers. They are free and open to the public.
